This nocturnal species is found in dense, mature forests consisting of hardwood, beech, maple, oak or butternut trees, as it feeds mainly on nuts. This source of food provides southern flying squirrels with essential reserves to survive winters. However, some are in the process of being listed as threatened (northern myotis, little brown myotis, eastern pipistrelle) or vulnerable (red bat) in the province. Among them, three are endangered in Canada: eastern pipistrelle, little brown myotis and northern myotis. Five of the eight species are considered &#8220;residents,&#8221; as they hibernate in Quebec; the other three migrate south. Bats live in varied habitats, ranging from forests to glades to wetlands. They nest in tree snags in summer and hibernate in caves or mines in winter. They are known to breed in the attics of houses and barns. Want to help protect bats? The nature reserve is large enough to protect the diversity of the ecosystems found here while ensuring adequate habitat for several large mammals, such as black bear, bobcat and moose. It is found in undisturbed sugar maple forests on lower slopes and flat terrain. In July, its white flowers gather in umbels. Its leaves whither during flowering and fruit production. Picking wild leek plants puts them at risk, as it can take up to 10 years before they can reproduce!
